The information below is a collection of helpful resources for international students who are new to Onondaga.  

Applying for a F-1 Visa

Apply for an F-1 visa: 

Important reminder for initial F-1 students:   

  • You are only allowed to enter the U.S. 30 days before school starts. If you attempt to come more than 30 days before the program’s starting date (see your I-20), you may be refused entrance into the U.S.
  • If you will live in the residence halls, please be aware that the earliest date you can move into your room is four days before the classes’ starting date. Therefore, if you plan to come before the move-in date, please make other accommodations as well. 

Travel to Syracuse  

  1. Keep the following documents on hand with you during your travel:
    • I-20
    • Passport
    • Visa 
    • Your admission letter
    • Supporting financial documents
  2. Airline tickets
  3. A small supply of necessary medicine
  4. Cash (not a large amount of cash), credit card or traveler‘s checks
  5. Phone card
  6. Emergency contact information
  7. Contact information of the person that will pick you up at the airport.


When booking your airplane ticket, please request the flight to be booked to Syracuse, New York. The International Airport is only 13 miles away from Onondaga Community College.

On-campus housing: 

Off-campus housing: Syracuse city has a decent public transportation system, but when you are looking for off-campus housing, please remember to check the distance and transportation convenience to the OCC campus.  Here are some websites that may help you in finding a place or roommate: 


The Fall 2016 International Student Orientation is scheduled as follows:

Date: Thursday, August 18th , 2016
Time: 9:30 am to 11:30 am (breakfast will be provided)
Location: Mawhinney Building, Room M-272, 4585 West Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse, New York  13215

Please note that you MUST bring the following documents with you to the International Student Orientation on August 18th, 2016:

  • Valid Passport
  • VISA
  • I-94
  • I-20
  • Course Schedule
