Season For Nonviolence Coming to Onondaga

Winter won’t be the only season at Onondaga in January. The College plans on embracing a three-month Season for Nonviolence in an effort to promote peace, tolerance and friendship in the community.

Celebrating more than a decade of service, A Season for Nonviolence is an international initiative inspired by the memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi, Cesar Chavez, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The initiative seeks to demonstrate that nonviolence remains a powerful way to heal, transform and empower our communities.

Running from Jan. 30 to April 4, the season follows a series of peaceful principles known as “64 Ways in 64 Days.” These principles provide daily peaceful commitments including:
            • Today, I will look at opportunities to be a peacemaker
            • Today, I will look beyond stereotypes and prejudices
            • Today, I will drive with tolerance and patience
            • Today, I will use no violent language
            • Today, I will be compassionate in my thoughts, words and actions

Onondaga invites the campus community to join the planning process and translate the “64 Ways” into meaningful, relevant events. As a member of the planning group, you’ll have the opportunity to engage, educate and practice the values of nonviolence. Ideas that incorporate the classroom experience and extend beyond academia are encouraged.

“The SpiritALIVE! campus community group recognizes the powerful impact that our participation in the Gandhi-King-Chavez Season for Nonviolence can have on our students and our community as a whole,” says Nancy Hazzard, director of student services initiatives. “The potential for positive far-reaching outcomes is immeasurable. We invite anyone intrigued by the possibilities to join us.”

Students, faculty and staff are all welcome to join the planning/implementation group. For more information on becoming a part of A Season for Nonviolence, contact Nancy Hazzard at (315) 498-2119 or via e-mail at hazzardn@sunyocc.edu.
