SUNY Chancellor Visits Onondaga

On Friday, August 21, 2009 SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher visited Onondaga as part of a 64-campus tour. Her visit included a “hard hat tour” of the College’s future Regional Higher Education Center built on the property of the former “Poor House.”

The interior of the building is not open to the public and is largely in the same condition it was when it previously served the needs of the ill and indigent. The building is structurally sound but rehabilitation of the property is necessary to restore it to once again serve the needs of citizens seeking to improve their circumstances, this time though, through higher education.

The building sits on 40+ acres of property near the corner of Velasko Road and Route 173 (Onondaga Road).  It is a historic building http://www.townononhist.org/poorhse4.htm built in 1928 that formerly housed the “2nd Hospital” on the Onondaga “Poor Farm” campus.   The re-purposed building will be the site of the Regional Higher Education Center and bring access to more four-year colleges and universities to citizens of our community.   Partnerships already exist with Keuka College, Cornell University, SUNY Cortland and SUNY Delhi.
