The Learning Center

Our Mission:

The mission of the Learning Center is to contribute to students’ academic excellence and success by providing students at all levels of development and ability flexible access to tutoring and learning support with the skills and in content areas vital for continued success at OCC and beyond in a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment.  Students who use the Learning Center will gain increased understanding of relevant skills, content areas, and strategies for accomplishing specific academic tasks, while becoming more independent learners.

In observance of Thanksgiving, there will be no tutoring in the Learning Center from Wednesday, November 21 through Saturday, November 24. Tutoring will resume on Sunday, November 25.

Notetaking, Part II: Taking notes using your textbook

You’ve invested a lot in your education.  Come to this workshop to learn how to use your textbooks and take good notes while you read to get the most out of your classes.

Workshops and study groups are free of charge.  Drop in or reserve your spot in advance on the Workshops and Study Groups schedule on WCOnline. 


Bring your Lazer Card! You need your card in the Learning Center.

Fall Hours of operation:

Monday-Thursday: 8 am- 9 pm

Friday: 8 am- 4:00 pm

Saturday-Sunday: 12-6 pm

The Learning Center sends a survey to your OCC email address after your appointment.   Check your OCC email after your tutoring session, workshop, or study group to tell us how it went and vote for Tutor of the Month.

Learning Center Policies:

Appointment Policy

  • A student may schedule a maximum of one (1) appointment per course per day. Any additional appointments must be scheduled by the front desk staff who will check to see how many appointments the student has had that day.
  • Students are allowed a maximum of two (2) scheduled appointments per week per course. Any additional appointments must be scheduled by the front desk staff who will check to see how many appointments the student has had that week.
  • Any walk-in is to be scheduled by front desk staff at the start of an appointment.
  • Back-to-back appointments are prohibited, including walk-ins. This policy applies even if the tutor is free during the next slot.
  • Group tutoring – students must share the same focus.
    • If students make appointments for two (2) different focuses, the student who made the appointment first has precedence.
  • Missed appointments count toward the allotted two (2) scheduled appointments. Missed will be considered ten (10) minutes late from the start of the appointment.
  • Tutoring appointments consist of 45 minutes of tutoring.
  • Students must attend class on a regular basis and attempt work prior to the session.
    • If this is not demonstrated, tutors may finish the session and mark the appointment as “missed”.
  • Take home exams & quizzes are not allowed.

Laptop Usage Policy

  • Only a valid Onondaga Community College ID is permitted for borrowing a laptop.
  • Tutors are not allowed to borrow a laptop for a student.
  • Laptop must remain in the possession of the individual who signs it out at all times.
  • Laptop must remain within the Learning Center at all times.
  • Front desk staff and tutors are not allowed to watch or look after the laptop for any reason.
  • Students are not permitted to receive chargers while using a laptop.
  • Individuals using a laptop are 100% responsible for any damage while in their possession.

Material & Equipment Policy, Copying Policy

  • Textbooks with either a yellow, bright green, orange, and/or pink sticker are for tutor use only.
  • Models & other resources are for tutor use only. Tutors may not sign them out for students.
  • Staff members are not permitted to make any copies for students or to print out documents from a student’s thumb drive or cloud.
  • All copies and printing must be for Learning Center business only.

Room Usage Policy For Students

  • Maximum amount of time allowed to use a room is two (2) hours per day.
  • Rooms must be signed out and back in at the front desk.
  • Lights must remain on at all times.
  • Door must remain open at all times.
  • No food or drink is allowed.
  • Must be used for academic work.
  • Maximum Occupancy for each room as follows:
  • G301 – 2 occupants
  • G302 – 2 occupants
  • G303 – 2 occupants
  • G304 – 2 occupants
  • G305 – 2 occupants
  • G306 – 2 occupants
  • G307 – 4 occupants
  • The above rooms are not allowed to be used on weekends and after 6 p.m. on weekdays.
  • Students are not allowed to use the following rooms without a tutor:
  • G202E
  • G202F
  • G202G
  • G202H
  • G202J
  • G202K
  • G202L
  • G202M

Note:

Violation of any of the room policies above will result in the loss of room usage privileges.

Inappropriate noise levels and language will not be tolerated and violators will be asked to leave.
