Re-Test Policy

All students are allowed one Reading re-test within 3 months of their initial test date.  Mathematics must be completed via the Math Diagnostics program listed below.  The Writing Sample (if eligible) is considered the Sentence Skills/English re-test (to be writing sample eligible, Sentence Skills score must be 76-85).

  • Before attempting a  re-test, we recommend that you seek basic skills education at one of the agencies listed below.

Re-test fee pending

Writing Sample

If your ACCUPLACER Sentence Skills score is 76 - 85, you are placed in ENG-099 Basic Composition, a non-credit course. You are requested to complete a Writing Sample to determine whether your placement should be changed to ENG-103 Freshman Composition & Literature I (3 credits).

You are strongly encouraged to complete this writing sample (which requires about 45 minutes).  It will be sent to the English Department for evaluation.  The writing sample is considered a re-test, no further re-testing will be allowed.

To complete the writing sample, report to the Gordon Student Center, Counseling Center kiosk.

See Placement Testing calendar for available hours.

Meanwhile, you should register for ENG-099.  Two to three weeks after completing the writing sample you will be informed of the English Department’s evaluation. If you have any further questions regarding the above information, please contact the Student Central at 315/498-2000.

Math Diagnostics

If your score recommends that you consult the diagnostician, please contact the MATH DIAGNOSTICS CENTER (Mawhinney Hall, Room A205) at 498-2611.  This program is designed to refine your math skills to the appropriate level which is required for your program of study.  Successful completion of this program will allow you to register for a higher level Math course than what your test scores indicated.  This program is free of charge!!

Programs that require a sequence of Mathematics courses will have a different placement schedule than those requiring a single math course.  Your academic advisor will discuss appropriate courses relating to your curriculum.
