Policy I9
Policy Name: Consensual Relationships
Responsibility for Maintenance: Human Resources

Date of most recent changes: June 1, 2010

I. Policy Statement

The College is committed to providing an environment that is free of employment discrimination, sexual harassment, and conflicts of interest.  To fulfill this obligation and commitment, persons in positions of authority or perceived authority are prohibited from initiating or engaging in consensual sexual relationships with any students or employees over whom they have any authority or responsibility, either directly or indirectly.

II. Reason for Policy

Consensual sexual relationships between employees and students and/or managers or supervisors and their subordinates create potential conflicts of interest and power differentials.  Potential conflicts of interest may arise when individuals have responsibility for evaluating the academic or work performance and/or making personnel decisions involving those with whom they have an intimate relationship.

III. Applicability of the Policy

This policy applies to all College employees and students.

VI. Procedures

At the time of application, and if necessary during employment, applicants and employees will be required to disclose all relatives and consensual relationships among currently employed individuals at Onondaga Community College. In the event that a situation arises in which a college employee has authority over an employee or student with whom they have a current consensual sexual relationship, the college faculty member, manager or supervisor must immediately notify Human Resources about the existence of the relationship. Human Resources will then conduct a review of the situation and respond as appropriate.
