Building Evacuation Procedures
Building Evacuation Procedures for People with Disabilities
- When the fire alarm is activated, evacuation is mandatory, even if you don't smell smoke
- Do NOT use elevators!
- Take personal belongings (keys, purses, wallets, etc.)
- Follow directions given by Campus Safety and Security and Emergency Personnel
- Assist persons with disabilities
Bomb Threat
- Remain calm
- Get as much information as possible from a threatening caller -- location of explosive device, when the device was planted, etc.
- Call 2311 (from a campus phone)
- follow instructions for emergency personnel
Emergency Preparedness
- Know your building's evacuation procedure for your area
- Those working with petroleum or hazardous materials should keep spill clean-up supplies nearby
- Get a battery-operated weather radio
- Discuss preparedness plans with family and friends
- Call Campus Safety and Security for fire extinguisher training
Fire
- Help remove those needing assistance from the immediate area
- Activate the nearest fire alarm pull station and call 2311 (from a campus phone) if possible
- Confine the fire by closing windows and doors
- Extinguish the fire if you have been trained and if it is safe to do so
- Evacuate the building
- Do not enter the building until authorized to do so by emergency personnel
Suspicious Object / Package
- Do not touch or disturb the object or package
- Call 2311 (from a campus phone)
- Notify your supervisor and Campus Safety and Security
Suspicious Person
- Do not physically confront the person
- Do not let anyone into a locked building / office
- Do not block the person's access to an exit
- Call 2311 (from a campus phone). Provide as much information as possible about the person and their direction of travel
Weather Emergency
- For up-to-date weather information:
- Monitor local radio and television stations
- Check the conditions on campus on the campus website - www.sunyocc.edu
- Be prepared to shelter in place until you're notified by OCC officials that it's safe to leave; have a plan for getting back together with fellow employees.
- During thunderstorms, do not handle electrical equipment
- During hurricanes or under tornado warnings:
- Seek shelter
- Stay away from windows; move to an interior hallway on a lower floor
- Get under sturdy furniture
- During Floods:
- Do not walk through flowing water or drive through flooded areas;
- Stay away from electrical lines
